Academics

WLC215- Italian Language & Culture

WLC215 is a 3-credit class that allows you to fulfill your general education language requirement. By taking this course, you will be able to have a first-hand experience of the use of basic Italian to communicate with people in an authentic context while visiting culturally important locations/museums in Rome that will enhance your knowledge of the history/culture of Italy. In addition to language testing through online activities prior to going abroad, you will complete a post-trip report on one artist/landmark of your choice, in which you will state any additional information you learned during the trip that could not have been acquired through books or a class lecture.

EN420- American Writers Abroad

Course may be taken as a traditional course or an honors course – In The Portrait of a Lady, Henry James describes Rome as having “history in the stones of the street and the atoms of the sunshine.” James and fellow 19th/ 20th Century American writers Edith Wharton and Constance Fenimore Woolson, who all traveled extensively in and wrote about Rome and other Italian locations, engaged with Italy’s beauty and history, drawing on it for both fiction and non-fiction pieces. We will read and reflect on selections from these writings. As we travel abroad, we will visit a number of the sites described by the authors, consider how the authors’ travels affected them as artists and thinkers, and how our reading informs our experience of Italy. Students will complete reading and short writing assignments or projects.
