Learn more about dance at the GCU Summer Intensive.
Lakewood, N.J., June 22, 2017—More than 175 years ago, Sisters of Mercy founder Catherine McAuley encouraged others to “Dance every evening.” At Georgian Court University, a Mercy institution, talented high school and college performers can do just that—dance every day—during GCU’s annual Summer Dance Intensive.
This year’s Summer Dance Intensive is from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 21, and is led by GCU Department of Dance faculty Erin Bonczek, B.F.A., and award-winning choreographer Silvana Cardell, M.F.A. Both work intensely—and successfully—during the academic year with GCU dance majors who perform locally and throughout the region.
The summer intensive is an immersive and informative five-day workshop, open to men and women in high school and college. Held in GCU’s cutting-edge Wellness Center dance studios, students take classes in Pilates, ballet, modern dance, improvisation, repertory, and choreography. Classes are held each day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The workshop concludes with a public performance by repertory students.
The summer intensive experience is praised by students and teachers alike as a positive, personal experience that is both challenging and rewarding.
“It gives the student a great opportunity to meet our teachers and see what the college classes are like at GCU,” says Erin Bonczek, an assistant professor of dance. “We have had many students do the summer intensive and then later attend college at GCU.”
Exposure, Preparation Make a Difference
Once such student was Christina Wright. She participated in the summer intensive for two years before deciding to attend GCU.
“I knew the first time I took class that I would become a student,” she says. “The summer intensive really allowed me to get a sense of how the department fit exactly what I was looking for in a school. It also allowed me to begin creating relationships with my future teachers,” she adds.
The tuition for the Summer Dance Intensive is $500. Students should register before July 17. Daily lunch is included, but students must bring proper dance attire.
