Celebrate Spring with a Tour of the Gilded Age Grandeur of GCU
Georgian Court Campus Tours Available to Public on Select Tuesdays
Lakewood, N.J., Apr. 17, 2008—Experience local history and beauty this spring with a Tuesday morning tour of the Georgian Court University campus in Lakewood. Guided tours include the historic Mansion, Casino, and McAuley Heritage Chapel, as well as the unique, lush gardens on the campus grounds.
Georgian Court University's 156-acre Lakewood campus is a National Historic Landmark. Among the historic buildings being toured are the Mansion, the Georgian-style winter home of millionaire George Jay Gould and his family. Dating from the late 1800s, the Mansion and many of the other estate buildings and gardens were designed by Bruce Price, the famous New York architect. The campus is also an arboretum, filled with many exotic tree species as well as some of the largest pine, oak, and fir trees in Ocean County. Visitors may even glimpse the “Carlton,” “Queen of the North,” and “Thalia” daffodils that sprang up in mid-April from the 1,000 heritage daffodil bulbs planted in the fall by GCU students in honor of the university’s Centennial celebration. The bulbs are the type that were popular in 1908, the year of the university’s founding.
Tours are available on the following Tuesdays: May 6, 13, 20, and 27, and June 3 and 10. All tours begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Mansion. Tickets are $10 per person, which includes light refreshments after the tour, and reservations are required. The excursion takes about 1.5 hours and includes approximately 45 minutes of outdoor walking on partially uphill paths. The walking tour is not wheelchair accessible. In the event of inclement weather, the walking tour will be abbreviated and a video program will be substituted.
