Georgian Court to Explore the Life of Stage Star Lillian Russell
Lakewood, N.J., Aug. 22, 2007—Georgian Court University welcomes soprano Lillian Russell for an unforgettable tea with “Mrs. Gould,” the wife of former Georgian Court owner George Jay Gould, on select dates in September and October. Settle in for an unforgettable tea and experience the Gilded Age at “Mrs. Gould Welcomes Lillian Russell,” the latest entry in GCU’s unique theatrical series, Biographies from The Court.
The program includes a performance and tea luncheon with an actress portraying Lillian Russell (1861–1922), one of the first ladies of the American stage. Born Helen Louise Leonard in Clinton, Iowa, Lillian Russell initially studied voice with the goal of becoming an opera singer. Ultimately, however, she settled on a career on the popular musical stage, and in 1879 she made her New York stage debut in the chorus of Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore. By the late 1880s, she reigned supreme as America’s favorite star of light opera and musical revues. Though married four times, Lillian was probably best known as the woman on the arm of the flamboyant Diamond Jim Brady. Join “Lillian Russell” for an unforgettable tea with “Mrs. Gould,” and enjoy a lyrical afternoon.
All performances take place in the historic Gould Mansion on the Lakewood campus. Performances are scheduled for September 12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 22, 26, 27, 29 and October 3, 4, 6, 10, 11, 17 (Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) at 11:30 a.m. Shows are also scheduled on September 16, 23, 30 and October 7 (Sundays) at 3:00 p.m. Doors open 20 minutes prior to performance, so it is recommended to plan your arrival accordingly.
