U.N. Day of Peace Prayer Service to Be Held at Georgian Court
Lakewood, N.J., Aug. 30, 2007—Georgian Court University and local community members will observe the United Nations Day of Peace on Thursday, September 20, with a prayer service led by Georgian Court academic advisor Helen Neder, RSM. The event, which will take place at 12:15 p.m. at the GCU Peace Pole on the Lakewood campus, is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.
In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring an International Day of Peace. Two decades later, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a new resolution declaring each September 21 as the International Day of Peace. Day of Peace observances are held internationally, including at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
Georgian Court University will hold its observance on September 20, distributing white peace ribbons to symbolize a desire to work and pray for peace. This is the second year that the event has been held on campus.
“Because it’s an international day designated by the U.N. for attention to peace, it’s an important event,” says Sister Neder. She added that last year’s event attracted approximately 100 participants from Georgian Court University and its surrounds. She hopes this year’s event will attract even more people praying for peace.
