Georgian Court University Establishes the Bishop John Smith Scholarship
Lakewood, N.J., Sept. 26, 2007—Sister Rosemary E. Jeffries, RSM, Ph.D., president of Georgian Court University, announced that the university was establishing a scholarship named in honor of Bishop John Smith on his 10th anniversary as bishop of the Diocese of Trenton. Bishop Smith was on campus Monday to celebrate Mercy Day Mass for the Sisters of Mercy who sponsor Georgian Court University. The announcement was made in a luncheon after Mass, which the bishop attended.
"We wanted to honor our bishop John Smith on his 10th anniversary as bishop," says President Jeffries. "He has been a welcome visitor so often to Georgian Court, and we have benefited from his counsel," she continues. "He's a man of wisdom and compassion, and we are fortunate to have him as our friend."
The Bishop John Smith Scholarship will recognize Catholic high school graduates who have distinguished academic achievement records and who have used their talents to serve their parishes, their schools, and their communities, following the example of Bishop John Smith.
The scholarship consists of one full-time scholarship for four years to be awarded annually, commencing in September 2008 to an outstanding student from the Diocese of Trenton. One scholarship per year will be awarded.
In order to be considered for this scholarship, a student must be an accepted applicant to Georgian Court University; have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and a minimum SAT score of 1100 (based on critical reading and math combined); be a parishioner of a Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Trenton; and write a 300-word essay on the topic "Living the Mercy Core Values of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Service, and Justice."
University fees and room and board are not covered by this scholarship.
