Georgian Court to Explore the Life and Works of Artist Velázquez
Adventure for the Mind and Palate Series Features Spanish Court Painter
Lakewood, N.J., Oct. 12, 2007—The artist to the court of Philip IV of Spain, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599–1660) captured the likenesses of the most important people and families of Europe, including royals, financiers, popes, and other heads of state, and was knighted for his work. His artwork inspired Édouard Manet, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso. His work will be explored at a multimedia presentation and multicourse dinner on Friday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. as part of Georgian Court’s popular Adventures for the Mind and Palate series.
Born in Seville, Spain, Velázquez went to Madrid at the age of 22 after marrying and fathering two daughters with the daughter of Francisco Pacheco, the master painter with whom he had studied. There he painted a portrait of Philip IV, who became his patron. Except for two visits to Italy (20 years apart), he remained in Madrid as court painter, primarily painting portraits of court notables, but also landscapes, historical pictures, and mythological scenes.
Presented by Lisa Festa, Ph.D., GCU assistant professor of art, “Velázquez: Portraits of History” will treat attendees to a multicourse tapas-style dinner, while they listen to traditional music selections. Dinner will include gazpacho, a red pepper and aubergine salad, and a traditional entrée. Attendees will then satisfy their sweet tooth with flan and crema catalana while Dr. Festa offers a multimedia presentation of the life and masterpieces of this quiet and prolific man.
The event will take place on the Georgian Court Lakewood campus in the North Dining Room. To make sure you get your tickets, which are $30 per person for the multicourse dinner and lecture, contact the Office of Conferences and Special Events at 732.987.2263 or email@example.com.
