Our mathematics program provides students with fundamental training to attend graduate school, become teachers in elementary or secondary schools, or take advantage of employment opportunities in industry, business, and education.

Courses in mathematics are designed to give the fundamental training necessary to prepare students to do graduate work in mathematics, to become teachers in the secondary schools or to take advantage of the employment opportunities that exist in industry, business and education. The courses provide all students with some understanding of mathematics and its importance to civilization. In addition students of the sciences are given the mathematical basis essential for their disciplines.

Mathematics Outcomes Assessment Plan Goals
The assessment of the mathematics major will be weighted heavily on the valuation of upper division course work. The evaluation will depend on whether the major wishes to teach elementary or high school mathematics, pursue graduate school or go directly into non-educational employment.
The lower division courses are a mix of science majors with some non-majors. Data obtained in these courses will be assessed in order to improve the foundation necessary for successful completion of the major and course modification to meet departmental goals.

- Apply standard algorithms using correct methods, terminologies and notations.
- Employ algebraic techniques to solve systems of equations and polynomial equations.
- Perform single variable and multivariable function differentiation and integration.

- Perform set and logic operations.
Students will be able to analyze and apply appropriate mathematical procedures to produce solutions of real-world and theoretical problems.

Students will be able to reason in a precise and logical fashion and identify key mathematical structures.
- Construct direct and indirect formal mathematical proofs.
- Define groups, rings, fields, vector spaces and identify key properties of these algebraic systems.
- Identify key properties of the real number system that underlie mathematical analysis.
- Derive properties of abstract structures based on their definitions.
- Construct algorithms to solve classes of problems and implement them in a computer programming language.
Students will use technology to model mathematical relations.
- Use graphing calculators and/or computer software to model functions, perform matrix calculations and operations.
