GCU Hosts “Expression through Contours” Serigraphy Exhibit
Lakewood, N.J., Mar. 13, 2007—Beginning April 2, explore the art of serigraphy at Georgian Court University’s M. Christina Geis Art Gallery with the bold and colorful work of artist Elissa F. Merkl, whose art will be on display for the exhibit “Expressions through Contours.” Serigraphy uses the stencil method of printmaking, in which inks are pressed through the fine meshes of a taut fabric screen onto a piece of paper or other material, to create fine art.
Ms. Merkl, a resident of Gillette, New Jersey, has received over 250 professional rewards. Her artwork is displayed in many private and public collections throughout the United States and in England, Germany, Scotland, Korea, Canada, Spain, Venezuela, and Argentina. In 1992 she was named Member of the Year by the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce for her work in its annual Art Fair.
“Screen printing is arduous and can be technically demanding. However, Ms. Merkl’s work demonstrates that she has mastered the process to such a degree that the viewer experiences the same delight that the artist does in creating her wonderfully exuberant images,” says Suzanne Pilgram, GCU associate professor of art.
“Expression through Contours” will be on display from April 2 through 27. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The exhibit and reception are both free and open to the public.
The M. Christina Geis Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Arts and Science Center on the Lakewood campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call Kathleen Settles at 732.987.2388.
