Spring into the History of Georgian Court’s Lakewood Campus
Tours Offer Both Beauty and Insight into Georgian Court History
Lakewood, N.J., Apr. 11, 2007—Save one Tuesday this spring for touring one of New Jersey’s historical landmarks. Georgian Court University opens its gates to the community on select Tuesday mornings. Come experience one-of-a-kind architecture, lush gardens, and inspiring statuary in person. Guided tours include the Gould Mansion, Casino, McAuley Heritage Chapel, and campus grounds.
Georgian Court University’s 155-acre Lakewood campus is a National Historic Landmark. Among the historic buildings being toured are the Mansion, the winter home of millionaire George Jay Gould and his family. Dating from the late 1800s, the Mansion and many of the other estate buildings and gardens were designed by Bruce Price, the famous New York architect. The campus is also an arboretum, filled with many exotic tree species as well as some of the largest pine, oak, and fir trees in Ocean County.
Tuesday tours are available on May 8, 15, 22, 29; as well as on June 5 and 12. All tours begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Mansion. Tickets are $10 per person, which includes light refreshments after the tour. The tour takes about 1.5 hours and includes approximately 45 minutes of outdoor walking on partially uphill paths. The walking tour is not wheelchair accessible. In the event of inclement weather, the outdoor walking tour will be abbreviated, and a video program will be substituted.
