Georgian Court Takes a Fresh Look at George Gershwin’s Life & Music
Lakewood, N.J., May 11, 2007—Georgian Court University welcomes legendary Broadway songwriter George Gershwin for an unforgettable tea with “Mrs. Gould,” the wife of former Georgian Court owner George Jay Gould, on select dates in May, June, and July. Settle in for an unforgettable tea and experience the Gilded Age at “Mrs. Gould Welcomes George Gershwin,” the latest entry in GCU’s unique theatrical series, Biographies from The Court.
The program includes a performance and tea luncheon with an actor portraying one of the prevailing Broadway songwriters of all times, George Gershwin. Born in Brooklyn in 1898, George Gershwin began his musical training at age 13 and published his first song by the age of 18. Soon after, George teamed up with his older brother, Ira, and their poignant ballads and catchy rhythm numbers made them legendary figures of 20th-century Broadway.
One of Gershwin’s most famous pieces, Porgy and Bess, a “folk opera,” debuted in 1935; three years after the brothers’ Of Thee I Sing became the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
All performances take place in the historic Gould Mansion on the Lakewood campus. Performances are scheduled for May 30 and 31; June 2, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 30; and July 5 and 7 (Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) at 11:30 a.m., and June 3, 10, 17, 24, and July 1 and 8 (Sundays) at 3:00 p.m. Doors open 20 minutes prior to performance, so it is recommended to plan your arrival accordingly.
Tickets are $40 per person. Because availability is limited, prepurchase of tickets is required for all performances. There will be no refunds within 14 days of the performance.
