Georgian Court Begins Centennial Film Classics Series with Wings
Movie Classics from Each Decade Shown for University’s Centennial Celebration
Lakewood, N.J., Aug. 28, 2008—Georgian Court celebrates its Centennial year with Centennial Film Classics, a Monday night film series featuring movies from each of the eight decades that the university has resided in Lakewood.
In 1924, the university moved to Lakewood from North Plainfield; just three years later came the release of the first film in this series, Wings (1927), the winner of the first-ever Academy Award for Best Picture and the only silent film to earn the Best Picture Oscar. It will be shown on Monday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre on GCU’s Lakewood campus.
Admission is free, but reservations are required due to limited space. For more information or to make reservations, contact GCU’s Office of Conferences and Special Events at 732.987.2263 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Forthcoming films in this series include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for the 1930s on October 20, Citizen Kane for the 1940s on November 17, and An American in Paris for the 1950s on December 1.
In 1917, Jack Powell (Charles “Buddy” Rogers) is a young man with a passion for cars. His next-door neighbor Mary Preston (Clara Bow) is deeply in love with him, but he does not notice. Jack loves Sylvia Lewis (Jobyna Ralston), but she is in love with the rich David Armstrong (Richard Arlen). When the United States enters World War I, Jack and David become aviators who fight in France and also pals. Mary joins the Women’s Motor Corps of America, trying to be close to Jack. But it is war, and a tragedy happens between the two friends.
