GCU Community Celebrates First Annual Victorian Christmas

Lakewood, N.J., Nov. 17, 2008—There is no better place to celebrate the holidays than the beautiful and historic Georgian Court University campus. To celebrate its Centennial year, the university is inaugurating its First Annual Victorian Christmas, which will take place on Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7. Students, staff, faculty, and their family members, along with members of Georgian Court’s more than 40 clubs, such as the Clionaes History Club and the Italian Club, have volunteered their time to work with a professional production company to treat visitors to life in the time and through the words of Charles Dickens.

The show will bring guests back in time to the holiday streets of Victorian London through song, dance, and good cheer. There will be a reenactment of the 1939 radio presentation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; an interactive performance by “the Rowdys,” a lively group of scalawags, pickpockets, vagabonds, and funsters; and a merry musical reenactment of the legendary Fezziwig’s Ball from A Christmas Carol. At the ball, visitors will meet many Dickens characters, including those from A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, Bleak House, and Great Expectations.

Sophomore math major Jalisa Thompson is one of the many student volunteers who will be participating in the event. “I am usually at home for these holidays,” she says, “so when I had an opportunity to be part of an old-fashioned Christmas that seemed to be similar to the plays and songs I experienced in my church, I quickly volunteered to help.”

Student hosts will guide guests to the three shows, with the event concluding in Dickens Alley for some Christmas shopping. Open from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm each day, Dickens Alley will offer a variety of high-quality vendors, refreshments, and the holiday sounds of Georgian Court’s own musical performers.

The cost is $20 per adult, $17 per senior over age 60, and $15 per child under age 10, which includes single performance attendance, light refreshments, and two-day access to Dickens Alley. For access to Dickens Alley ONLY, it’s just $5 per person. Check-in for the event will be in the Arts and Science Center lobby on the Lakewood campus. Performances will take place at 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. each day. Reservations are required.
