GCU Dance Ensemble Holds Spring Dance Concert
Lakewood, N.J., Apr. 27, 2009—The Georgian Court University Dance Ensemble will hold its first Spring Dance Concert on Thursday, April 30, and Saturday, May 2, both at 8:00 p.m. at the Strand Theater in Lakewood. The GCU Dance Ensemble is the pre-professional company of the GCU Department of Dance, open by audition to majors and minors in the department.
The pieces performed will include modern, jazz, musical theater, hip-hop, contemporary, and tap. The show will feature dance majors and minors performing in works choreographed by the students, who have been mentored by Heather Sultz, assistant professor and director of the GCU dance program. The concerts will also feature works by guest choreographers Darla Johnson and Randy James. Ms. Sultz will also perform an original piece.
Darla Johnson is an independent choreographer and a teacher. She founded the dance department at Austin Community College and has twice received the Teachers Excellence Award. She teaches improvisation, choreography, and a performance workshop class. In the summer of 2008, her duet “Map Making” was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
Randy James is a master teacher and an emotionally evocative choreographer, receiving commissions from dance companies, colleges, and universities. He has been a guest artist at various institutions including the American Dance Festival, London Contemporary Dance Theater and School, Tage des Tanzas in Germany and Austria, and Via Danse in Latvia, among others. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet at Lincoln Center in Aida and was a principal dancer with Dan Wagoner & Dancers for eight years.
The same dance pieces will be performed on both dates. Tickets are only available at the Strand Theater box office. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $12 for children age 12 and under, seniors, and students; and $9 with Georgian Court ID.
