About Lilies of the Field
Sidney Poitier became the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as handyman Homer Smith in this endearing movie. Smith serendipitously passes through a little town in New Mexico, and ends up staying awhile to build a chapel for a group of German nuns who escaped Communist Berlin. Poitier is highly entertaining in his combative exchanges with Lilia Skala, playing a Mother Superior who survived Hitler and makes no bones about bullying the goodhearted, itinerant worker into doing more and more for her.
