Georgian Court University Hosts Community of Light Ceremony
Ceremony to Promote Awareness of Domestic Violence
Lakewood, N.J., Nov. 20, 2009—Georgian Court University will host a Community of Light ceremony on Thursday, December 3, at 5:00 p.m. at the Peace Pole in front of the Arts and Science Center on the Lakewood campus. Members of the campus community will light candles from special luminary kits produced by volunteers and supporters of Providence House Domestic Violence Services of Catholic Charities to raise awareness of domestic violence and the services available to help victims in Ocean County. Mary Pettrow, associate director of Providence House, will speak at the ceremony.
Participants are invited to light their candles at the Peace Pole or to light their own candles from their kits outside their homes. One set of luminaries symbolizes the solidarity and hope that a frightened victim and their children need to seek assistance. The luminary kits are $10 and include six candles.
The Community of Light ceremony is being planned and organized by Georgian Court sophomore Amy Lenhart of Delanco, New Jersey. Amy, a social work major, chose to focus her service learning experience on domestic violence in order to raise awareness of the issue in her local community and among her fellow students.
“Domestic violence is an important issue everywhere; and before you can stop the problem, you have to learn about it,” says Amy.
“It is important for Georgian Court University, which has a Women’s College and a special concern for women, to host the ceremony because college campuses need to be aware of domestic abuse and places victims can go to for help,” says Marcia Fishkin, community liaison for Providence House.
For more information or to purchase a luminary kit, please contact Amy at email@example.com. All proceeds from the sale of the luminary kits benefit Providence House.
