Pre-Professional Career Preparation at GCU
Did you know that you can become a doctor, vet, or other health professional without a specific pre-med major? Many Georgian Court graduates have gone on to successful careers as doctors, chiropractors, dentists, podiatrists, physician assistants, and vets. The most common undergraduate major for medical school applicants is biology, followed by chemistry. It’s actually possible to major in any subject and still be admitted to a professional school, as long as you have taken the specific science courses required by the program you’re interested in—and, of the course, have the required GPA and volunteer experience.
Georgian Court’s small classes and personalized attention create a learning environment where you can succeed in achieving the high GPAs required for entrance to professional schools, as well as building your résumé with research and internship opportunities. Your professors also get to know you, allowing them to write strong letters of recommendation. Knowledgeable advisors will work with you to make sure you take the necessary courses in the best sequence to prepare you for the standardized tests (MCAT, GRE, DAT) needed for admission to your desired program.
GCU’s pre-medical advisors are Dr. Carolyn Bergman and Dr. Brunella Bowditch. Dr. Bergman also advises pre-dental and optometry students. Dr. Louise Wootton is our pre-veterinary advisor. Please feel free to contact them if you have questions about preparing for these careers. Georgian Court also has an active Pre-Med Club that sponsors speakers about medical careers, studying for the MCATs, organizes trips to museums with health-related exhibits, and holds fund-raisers with health themes.
