Program Information

This comprehensive 50-hour EKG technician certification program prepares you to function as an EKG technician and to take the ASPT—Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician Exam and other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography, and stress testing. Additionally, you’ll practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement, and other clinical practices.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) EKG Technician (CET) Exam.

This 90-hour phlebotomy technician program prepares you to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. You’ll become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work include terminology, anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, specimen hands-on practice, and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam.

Clinical Externship: This program includes a 40-hour clinical externship opportunity. To be eligible for the clinical, you must successfully complete the 90-hour program, submit to a thorough background check and drug screening, and meet other requirements.

Patient care technicians work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, physician’s offices, and assisted living facilities. These professionals must possess the technical skills necessary to service complex patient care issues, including rehabilitation services, diagnostic tests, basic bedside care, collection of laboratory specimens, phlebotomy, and EKGs. In addition to labs requiring you to practice and demonstrate EKG, phlebotomy, and baseline nursing skills, lecture topics for this program include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and miscellaneous patient care concepts. Other topics include HIPAA, vital signs, patient care, personal hygiene and grooming, and aseptic technique.

NHA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT), Certified Nurse Technician (CNT), and/or Certified Patient Care Associate (CPCA) national certification exams.

This combined 80-hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims. and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers CPT (introduction, guidelines, evaluation, and management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory), ICD-10 (introduction and guidelines), and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third-party reimbursements. You’ll learn how to find the service and code using manuals (CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS).

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Medical Billing and Coding Specialist (MBCS) Exam.

This comprehensive 50-hour program will prepare you to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, you’ll review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs,” IV flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Pharmacy Technician (PTAC) Exam.

Clinical Externship: As part of this pharmacy technician program, you will be eligible to participate in an 80-hour clinical externship.

This program is intended to prepare you for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in health care. This program will train you to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle. You’ll review important topics including phlebotomy; pharmacology; the proper use and administration of medications; taking and documenting vital signs; cardiology, including proper lead placements; a professional workplace behavior; ethics; and the legal aspects of health care. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local health care provider.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Clinical Medical Assistant (CMAC) Exam.

Clinical Externship: This program includes a 160-hour clinical externship opportunity. To be eligible for the clinical, you must successfully complete the 140-hour program, submit to a thorough background check and drug screening, and meet other requirements.

The 60-hour dental assisting program prepares you for entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions—dental assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with all areas of preclinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice. This course covers administrative aspects such as the history of dentistry and dental assisting, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, policies, and guidelines. The course also covers clinical aspects such as an introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment; introduction to tooth structure, including primary and permanent teeth, the oral cavity, and related structures; proper patient positioning; dental handpieces; sterilization; and other areas. In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal dental hygienist program.

This 50-hour dialysis technician program provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties required of dialysis technicians. Under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, dialysis technicians operate kidney dialysis machines, prepare dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, as well as maintain and repair equipment. Furthermore, technicians work with patients during dialysis procedures and monitor and record vital signs as well as administer local anesthetics and drugs as needed. Additionally, they may also be involved in the training of patients for at-home dialysis treatment. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. There is no student internship or clinical rotation offered as part of this program.

This 95-hour electronic health record (EHR) management program prepares you to understand and use electronic records in a medical practice. Access to health information is changing the ways doctors care for their patients. Doctors now have access to a patient’s medical history, surgeries, allergies to medicines, and recent doctor’s visits, all at the press of a button. This recent technology that intertwines health information from a variety of sources is known as an electronic health record (HER). An EHR includes computerized lifelong health care data from a variety of sources, in which every encounter an individual has with the health care system is documented and compiled for quick access. EHR professionals are educated in the implementation and management of electronic health information using common electronic data interchange systems such as HL7, CDISC, and DICOM. Through classroom and computer lab training, you’ll learn the necessary components consistent with maintaining the medical, legal, accreditation, and regulatory requirements of the electronic health record and database.

This 100-hour veterinary assistant program introduces you to the exciting and growing field of veterinary medicine. You’ll learn about the care of animals as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, as well as how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking, and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide you with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office. The American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) Basic First Aid course helps you develop basic first aid knowledge and skills and the confidence to respond. The program is an excellent choice for both the community and workplace setting and conforms to the 2015 AHA and ARC Guidelines Update for First Aid. The course covers various sudden injuries, sudden illness, and environmental emergencies. Certification is valid for two years from course completion date.

The child and babysitting safety (CABS) program from the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) gives teenagers and young adults everything they need to know for safe and successful babysitting, from getting started with their business, to dealing with parents and children, to key safety, caregiving, and first aid tips. This program is not intended to meet any regulatory requirements for childcare providers. There are no prerequisites for taking the CABS program, but additional training in CPR, AED, and first aid is highly recommended.

Registrations will close 48 hours prior to the course start date. No late registrations will be accepted.

Payment Options

The university accepts cash, checks, money orders, and cashier’s checks. Checks must be made out to Georgian Court University.

Cash: Cash is accepted in person only at Lake House, 555 Lakewood Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701

Checks: Checks should be made payable to Georgian Court University and include your name and student ID (if available). A $55 fee will apply for all returned checks.

Online: Payments by electronic check and debit/credit card are done online through Self- Service. All debit/credit card payments will be charged a convenience fee of 2.75%. There is no fee for an electronic check. We do not accept debit/credit card payments on site.

Employer Sponsorship: Employers may send us a purchase order or voucher stating their intent to pay for the student’s course along with a completed Employer Sponsorship form, which is available online at georgian.edu/cps or in this book.

Cancellations and Refunds

Cancellations: The Center for Professional Studies at GCU reserves the right to cancel, reschedule, or combine program events that are below the minimum participant requirement. Should a cancellation occur, staff will contact the participant about the cancellation or about any alternative program event(s). You may elect to transfer your registration to a combined or alternate program. If you are unavailable to attend the alternate program or the program is cancelled, all tuition and fees will be refunded via check.

Refunds: Refund and withdrawal requests must be received 10 or more days before the beginning of a class to receive a 100% refund. With less notice, no refund will be provided. Please note that some courses do incur a nonrefundable registration fee as noted in the course details.

Inclement Weather and Emergency Closings

Please check georgian.edu, official Georgian Court social media channels, or local news sources to check for cancellations due to inclement weather. Cancelled classes are made up by adding on an additional session after the last scheduled class, based on instructor and classroom availability.
