The Vivien Thomas Story – A Black History Month Presentation
February 20 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
Moderator: Cynthia Mattia, RN, GCU Director of Health Services
Join us for a screening and discussion of Partners of the Heart (2004), a documentary on the groundbreaking life of Vivien Thomas (1910–1985), an African-American pioneer who overcame segregation and a lack of any formal medical training to develop the techniques and tools now used for open heart surgery. His partnership with Dr. Alfred Blalock, a renowned white surgeon, ultimately led to one of the century’s major breakthroughs—a heart operation that has saved thousands of children
afflicted with a congenital heart defect called “Blue Baby Syndrome.” Narrated by Morgan Freeman, Partners of the Heart was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and was broadcast on PBS’s American Experience.
