Why study the Chemistry, B.S. at GCU?

Finish Your Bachelor's in 7 Semesters — Start Your Master's in Semester 8

GCU's B.S. in Chemistry includes a unique accelerated pathway with Seton Hall University: complete your bachelor's degree in seven semesters, then begin SHU's M.S. in Chemistry program in your eighth semester — saving one full semester of GCU tuition while accelerating your path to a graduate degree. Students with a 3.0 GPA or higher who indicate interest can formally apply to SHU's M.S. program at the beginning of their fourth year. It's one of the most efficient routes to a graduate chemistry credential in New Jersey.

ACS-Aligned Curriculum — One of the Most Rigorous in NJ

GCU's Chemistry program is built around the five foundational areas of chemistry — physical, organic, inorganic, analytical, and biochemistry — with all required coursework including University Physics I and II (calculus-based) and Calculus I and II. Students take the ETS Major Field Achievement Test in Chemistry before graduation — a nationally standardized benchmark that verifies your preparation is competitive with students at universities across the country. This is a program designed to produce chemists, not just chemistry credit holders.

Lab Skills That Industry and Graduate School Actually Demand

Chemistry is a laboratory discipline — and GCU's program treats it that way. From General Chemistry I through Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, and the senior research sequence, you'll develop proficiency with the instruments, techniques, and data analysis methods that real chemical laboratories require: UV-VIS spectrometers, pH meters, analytical balances, chromatography, and more. Technical writing and oral communication are integrated throughout every course, not tacked on at the end.

Faculty-Mentored Research and Departmental Honors

Advanced Chemistry students can pursue original research through the CH350/CH449/CH450 Research in Chemistry/Biochemistry sequence — two semesters of independent laboratory investigation under direct faculty supervision, with a required technical paper documenting findings. The Departmental Honors Program invites exceptional students at the beginning of junior year to participate in this research at the highest level. Research experience is one of the most important credentials you can build as an undergraduate chemistry student.

Accelerated B.S. Chemistry + Seton Hall University M.S. Chemistry Program

Program overview

Chemistry is where fundamental science becomes transformative application — and GCU’s B.S.

in Chemistry is built to take you from foundational principles all the way to the front line of a chemical career.

The program begins with a two-year laboratory-oriented introduction to general chemistry, organic chemistry, and quantitative analysis — building both conceptual understanding and hands-on laboratory competency simultaneously. Upper-level coursework then deepens your expertise across the discipline’s five core areas: quantum chemistry, reaction dynamics (physical chemistry), inorganic chemistry, instrumental analysis, and biochemistry through CH416 Topics in Chemistry/Biochemistry.

University Physics I and II (calculus-based) and Calculus I and II are required — providing the quantitative and mathematical foundation that distinguishes a rigorous B.S. in Chemistry from a descriptive science education. Calculus III (MA215) is strongly recommended for students planning graduate study.

The senior seminar (CH420 Chemistry/Biochemistry Seminar) is the program’s capstone public experience — students present their work to faculty and departmental peers, developing the professional communication skills that the chemical sciences demand throughout a career.

For students pursuing the highest level of undergraduate research experience, the CH350/CH449/CH450 research sequence provides two semesters of original investigation under faculty mentorship — one of the most valuable credentials an undergraduate science student can build.

The accelerated Seton Hall M.S. partnership means that the most ambitious Chemistry students can complete both a GCU B.S. and an SHU M.S. in Chemistry in fewer than five years — a genuine competitive advantage in the NJ and national chemistry job market, where graduate credentials significantly expand career options and earning potential.

New Jersey’s position as one of the nation’s top pharmaceutical and chemical industry states means that Chemistry graduates have access to major employers within commuting distance — from Johnson & Johnson and Merck to BASF, Air Products, and countless mid-size specialty chemical companies.

Chemistry, B.S. FAQ

Q: How does the Seton Hall University M.S. Chemistry partnership work? A: The accelerated partnership allows Chemistry B.S. students with a 3.0+ GPA to complete their bachelor’s degree in seven semesters — three and a half years — and then enroll in Seton Hall University’s M.S. in Chemistry program in their eighth semester. You save one full semester of GCU tuition and begin your graduate program without gaps or delays. You can indicate interest when you first enroll at GCU, and you formally apply to SHU’s program at the start of your fourth year. This partnership is worth discussing with your advisor from day one.

Q: What’s the difference between Chemistry and Biochemistry at GCU? A: Both programs share a common core — general chemistry, organic chemistry, and quantitative analysis — and both are excellent pre-professional preparations. Chemistry goes deeper into the physical, inorganic, and analytical dimensions of the discipline: quantum chemistry, reaction dynamics, inorganic chemistry, and instrumental analysis are all required. Biochemistry focuses more on the molecular biology of living systems — replacing inorganic chemistry and instrumental analysis with Biochemistry I & II, cell biology, and genetics. Chemistry is the stronger choice for students pursuing pharmaceutical research, materials science, graduate study in pure chemistry, or the Seton Hall M.S. partnership. Biochemistry is the stronger choice for students whose primary goal is medical school or molecular biological research.

Q: Is the Chemistry degree good preparation for medical school? A: Yes — the B.S. in Chemistry is one of the recognized pre-medical programs at GCU, and the content maps directly to the MCAT’s chemistry and physical sciences sections. The rigorous coursework in organic chemistry (I and II), biochemistry (through CH416), and the physics sequence demonstrates the quantitative scientific capability that medical schools value. GCU Chemistry majors have access to the same BS/MD partnerships with St. George’s University and Western Atlantic University School of Medicine as Biology and Biochemistry majors.

Q: Can I become a Chemistry teacher with this degree? A: Yes. The B.S. in Chemistry qualifies students for NJ Teacher of Chemistry (K–12) certification with Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement. See the Department of Education section of the catalog for required education coursework and clinical practice requirements.

Q: What GPA do I need to stay in the Chemistry program? A: You must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in your chemistry courses after completing 16 credits of freshman/sophomore chemistry to continue in the major.

Q: What does the ETS Major Field Test mean for me? A: The ETS Major Field Achievement Test in Chemistry is a nationally standardized exam administered to all chemistry and biochemistry majors before graduation. It benchmarks your chemical knowledge against students at comparable institutions across the country. It’s taken as part of CH420 Chemistry/Biochemistry Seminar — not a separate external registration — and ensures that GCU chemistry graduates meet national standards of competency.

Q: When should I apply? A: GCU uses rolling admissions — apply any time. Priority deadlines are November 1, January 1, and March 1. Students interested in the Seton Hall accelerated partnership or the BS/MD programs are especially encouraged to apply early and discuss their goals with their advisor from the first year.

Graduate/Professional Pathways:
