Why study the Mercy Spirituality, Online Graduate Certificate at GCU?

The Only Graduate Certificate of Its Kind — Rooted in a Living Tradition

GCU's Online Graduate Certificate in Mercy Spirituality is, to our knowledge, the only graduate certificate program in the country specifically focused on the spirituality and charism of the Sisters of Mercy. It exists because that tradition — grounded in mercy as a theological, ethical, and lived practice — deserves more than an institutional acknowledgment. It deserves serious academic engagement. This certificate provides that.

Fully Online — Available to Sisters, Associates, and Allies Anywhere

Because the Mercy community extends well beyond Lakewood, New Jersey, this program is delivered entirely online. Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates, ministry professionals, and others connected to the Mercy charism can engage this curriculum from anywhere — without relocating, without interrupting their ministries, and without compromising the depth of their engagement.

A Sequential Journey, Not a Course Collection

Unlike most certificate programs, the Mercy Spirituality certificate is intentionally sequential — each of the five courses builds directly on the last, moving from the foundations of Christian spirituality and the Mercy charism through history, comparative spirituality, ethical praxis, and finally a culminating theology of mercy. The structure is deliberate: this is a formation experience as much as an academic one.

Faculty Grounded in Both the Academy and the Mission

GCU's theology and spirituality faculty bring the Catholic intellectual tradition and the specific history of the Sisters of Mercy into every course — teaching this material not as distant history but as a living inheritance that calls its inheritors to action. For those who want to go deeper into the Mercy charism with the guidance of scholars who share that commitment, this is a rare and genuinely meaningful opportunity.

Program overview

Georgian Court University was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1908, and the Mercy charism — expressed through the core values of respect, integrity, justice, compassion, and service — shapes every dimension of the university’s mission. The Online Graduate Certificate in Mercy Spirituality is GCU’s most direct academic expression of that founding identity, offering graduate-level exploration of Mercy spirituality for those who want to engage it not just as a historical tradition but as a living practice.

The 15-credit program unfolds sequentially across five courses, each building on the last. Beginning with the foundations of Christian spirituality and the theological, scriptural, and historical roots of the Mercy charism, the program moves through the history and evolving expression of Mercy, a comparative study of Mercy spirituality in dialogue with other religious traditions and interfaith practice, an exploration of ethical praxis rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and the arts, and a culminating theological reflection on what it means to live mercy as a personal and communal vocation in the contemporary world.

This program is delivered entirely online — designed to be accessible to Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates, and others connected to the Mercy mission wherever they are, without requiring relocation or on-campus attendance.

Program Information

This program is designed for the person who works or has worked in institutions that are sponsored or affiliated with the Sisters of Mercy, is a Sister of Mercy, an associate, volunteer, companion, or, more generally, is a seeker who is interested in deepening her/his understanding of the spiritual life through the lens of the “mercy of God.” This program anticipates that each beginning class of participants will travel through the program as a cohort, becoming an “online community” from near and far. This is an academic program as well as one dedicated to adult spiritual formation that will support and encourage questions, reflection, and “new eyes.” This is a 15-credit certificate. Additionally, there is an option to take this certificate without academic credit.

The following admission requirements must be met for matriculation into the online Georgian Court University Mercy Spirituality Graduate Certificate Program:
