School Administrator (Superintendent), Post-Master’s Endorsement

The superintendency is the highest leadership title in a New Jersey school district. GCU's postmaster's School Administrator (Superintendent) endorsement pathway is built for principals and administrators who are ready to make that move — adding the additional coursework, internship, and Praxis examination required for NJ School Administrator certification.

Why study the School Administrator (Superintendent), Post-Master’s Endorsement at GCU?

The Highest Administrative Credential in NJ Public Education

The School Administrator (Superintendent) Certificate of Eligibility authorizes you for the most senior leadership role in any NJ school district. Superintendents set the direction for entire organizations — managing staff, budgets, policy, community relations, and the academic vision for every student in the district. This credential opens that door.

Just One Course Beyond the M.A.

If you've completed GCU's Administration & Leadership M.A. — or an equivalent NJ-approved administration program — earning the Superintendent CE requires only one additional course (EDC6094, 3 credits) plus a passing score on the Praxis School Administrator exam. It's one of the most efficient doctoral-adjacent credentials available to practicing NJ school leaders.

A 150-Hour Central Office Internship

EDC6094 isn't just a course — it's a 150-hour supervised internship in central administration, placing you in the district-level leadership environment where superintendents actually work. You'll observe, participate, and build the professional relationships and contextual knowledge that classroom-based coursework alone cannot provide.

New Jersey's Districts Need Qualified Leadership

NJ's superintendent workforce is aging, and the pipeline of qualified candidates does not always meet demand — particularly in urban and mid-size districts. Candidates who hold the Superintendent CE alongside genuine administrative experience are consistently competitive in a field where strong leadership directly shapes community outcomes.

Program overview

In New Jersey, the School Administrator title is required for any position involving district-level administrative leadership — including superintendent, assistant superintendent, and director. Holders are authorized to direct district-wide goals and policy, recommend all staff appointments, direct district operations, and supervise building administrators and central office staff.

GCU’s pathway to this credential is designed for two audiences:

For graduates of GCU’s Administration & Leadership M.A.: The M.A. already satisfies the majority of the required coursework. You need one additional course — EDC6094 School Chief Administrator Internship III (3 credits, 150 clinical hours in central administration) — plus a passing score on the School Administrator Praxis examination.

For graduates of other approved NJ administration and leadership programs: The pathway is comparable. Candidates who have completed a NJ-approved administration and leadership program take EDC6094 and pass the Praxis exam.

This endorsement authorizes you for the highest-level district leadership roles in New Jersey public education.

Program Information

According to the New Jersey Department of education website (https://www.state.nj.us/education/license/sl/),

The School Administrator title is required for any position that involves services as a district-level administrative officer. Such positions include superintendent, assistant superintendent, and director. Holders of this title are authorized to provide educational leadership by directing the formulation of district-wide goals, plans, policies and budgets, by recommending their approval by the district board of education and by directing their district-wide implementation. Holders of this title are authorized to recommend all staff appointments and other personnel actions, such as terminations, suspensions and compensation, including the appointment of school business administrators, for approval by the district board of education. Holders of this title are authorized to direct district operations and programs, and to supervise and evaluate building administrators and central office staff, including school business administrators. They are also authorized to oversee the administration and supervision of school-level operations, staff and programs.

Candidates who have completed a NJ Approved Administration and Leadership/Administration Program, have to take one additional 150-hour internship in central administration (EDC6094 School Chief Admin Internship III) and pass the School Administrator Praxis for certification.
