School districts run on budgets — and the School Business Administrator is the professional responsible for making those budgets work. GCU's 18-credit post-master's program prepares educators and business professionals for New Jersey certification as a School Business Administrator, the chief financial officer of a school district.

The School Business Administrator is not a general administrator — it's a specialized NJ certification for the professional responsible for a district's financial operations, budget planning, payroll, facilities, transportation, and contract management. No other administrative credential covers this scope, and no district can function without a qualified SBA in this role.
If you have a master's degree in business, accounting, or finance and want to bring that expertise into public education, this 18-credit endorsement is your most direct path. GCU's program includes AC602 Management Accounting & Budgetary Control and EC611 Managerial Economics alongside Education-specific courses — bridging the business competencies you already have with the school-specific context this role demands.
School Business Administrators in NJ are compensated at a level commensurate with the complexity and responsibility of the role — typically earning salaries comparable to or exceeding many building-level administrators. In larger districts, the SBA manages tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds.
NJ school districts are navigating increasing financial complexity — shifting state aid formulas, post-pandemic budget pressures, facility aging, and competitive compensation demands. Qualified SBAs who understand both the business and the educational dimensions of district leadership are in real, sustained demand.
The School Business Administrator (SBA) is an integral member of the district leadership team — typically responsible for budget planning, payroll, grants management, site planning, transportation, technology, and contract negotiations. In New Jersey, the SBA role requires a specific certification administered by the NJ DOE.
GCU’s post-master’s program prepares individuals with graduate degrees in education, administration, accounting, or business for this specialized credential. The curricular focus is on developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed as a financial administrator in an inclusive school district — aligned with the New Jersey Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. Prior knowledge of business, accounting, and spreadsheet applications is beneficial.
This program bridges two worlds: educational leadership and business management. It’s designed for educators who want to move into district administration through the financial leadership pathway, and for business and accounting professionals who want to bring their expertise into school district service.
