Why study the Theology, Graduate Certificate at GCU?

Rigorous Graduate Theology — Accessible to Anyone With a Bachelor's Degree

GCU's Graduate Certificate in Theology requires only a 2.75 GPA and a bachelor's degree — one of the most accessible entry points in GCU's entire graduate catalog. You don't need a theology undergraduate background. You don't need a perfect academic record. You need intellectual curiosity, a commitment to serious engagement with faith and ideas, and the desire to study theology at a genuinely graduate level.

A Curriculum Rooted in GCU's Mercy and Catholic Intellectual Tradition

Georgian Court University was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, and the Graduate Certificate in Theology is the most direct academic expression of that founding identity. Every course engages the Catholic intellectual tradition — Scripture, systematic theology, historical theology, ethics, and contemporary issues — with rigor, openness, and the conviction that faith and reason belong together.

Transfer Credits Welcome

Up to six credits from another accredited institution can transfer toward the 18-credit certificate — making this program unusually welcoming to students who've done graduate-level theological study elsewhere. If you've taken courses at a seminary, Catholic college, or university theology department, those credits may count.

Meaningful for Ministry, Education, and Lifelong Learning

The certificate serves a wide range of students: deacons and pastoral ministers seeking academic credentials, Catholic school educators deepening their theological formation, laypeople pursuing serious engagement with their faith, and lifelong learners who want more than parish adult education can offer. Whatever your reason for coming, GCU's theology faculty will meet you where you are and take you further.

Program overview

Georgian Court University’s mission as a Mercy university is rooted in the Catholic intellectual and spiritual tradition — and the Graduate Certificate in Theology is one of the most direct expressions of that mission. It offers a graduate-level theological education that is rigorous, broad, and genuinely accessible: the GPA threshold is 2.75 (lower than most GCU graduate programs), up to 6 transfer credits are accepted from other accredited institutions, and the program is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree.

The 18-credit certificate covers the full scope of graduate theological study at GCU: biblical studies (Old and New Testaments), systematic theology (Christology, Trinity, Sacraments, Christian community), historical theology, and contemporary theological issues. Students select courses in consultation with their advisor to build a program that reflects their interests — whether that’s Scripture, church history, moral theology, or contemporary applications of faith.

GCU’s theology faculty bring both academic rigor and pastoral depth to their teaching, reflecting the university’s Mercy mission of educating students for lives of service, justice, and compassion.
