As a Catholic university in the Mercy tradition, GCU is a natural place to prepare for ministry. The certificate connects Religious Studies coursework directly to the pastoral, counseling, and canonical knowledge that real ministry roles require.
Beyond core Religious Studies coursework, candidates choose from courses in Christian Formation Ministry, Pastoral Counseling Applications, Canon Law, and the Theology of Pastoral Ministry — building practical skills alongside academic grounding.
At 18 credits, the certificate is designed to be earned by current Religious Studies majors and minors without derailing their primary course of study — a natural next step for students already committed to the discipline.
Pastoral ministry asks for more than subject knowledge — it asks for the ability to walk with people through formation, counseling, and community life. GCU’s Pastoral Ministry Certificate is built for Religious Studies majors and minors who want that preparation formally recognized.
Candidates complete 12 credits in Religious Studies, chosen in consultation with their academic advisor, plus 6 credits in Pastoral Studies — two courses selected from Christian Formation Ministry, Counseling: Pastoral Applications, Introduction to Canon Law, and Theology of Pastoral Ministry. Upon completing these 18 credits, candidates earn an Undergraduate Certificate in Pastoral Ministry from Georgian Court University — a credential that signals genuine readiness for parish, school, or community-based ministry work.
Candidates enrolled in the Undergraduate Pastoral Ministry Certificate program are required to complete 12 credits in Religious Studies (chosen in conversation with the academic advisor) and 6 credits in Pastoral Studies (two courses chosen from among RS450 Christian Formation Ministry, RS451 Counseling: Pastoral Applications, RS452 Introduction to Canon Law, and RS456 Theology of Pastoral Ministry) for a total of 18 credits. Upon completion of these 18 credits, the candidate will earn an Undergraduate Certificate in Pastoral Ministry from Georgian Court University.
