New Jersey's multilingual classrooms need teachers who can serve students in more than one language. GCU's 12-credit Bilingual/Bicultural Education Endorsement prepares certified teachers to teach content to English learners in bilingual settings — earning the NJ endorsement that formally authorizes that work.

New Jersey has one of the largest and most linguistically diverse multilingual learner populations in the country — and a persistent shortage of teachers certified to teach content bilingually. If you are proficient in English and another language (most commonly Spanish), this endorsement positions you for roles that are actively and urgently needed across the state.
Bilingual teachers don't just know two languages — they know how to teach academic content effectively in two languages simultaneously, supporting students' English language development while ensuring they don't fall behind in core content areas. This endorsement develops that specific, sophisticated instructional capability.
The endorsement is 12 credits — four courses — and four of those courses are shared with GCU's ESL endorsement curriculum. If you've already completed ESL coursework, you may be closer to the bilingual endorsement than you think. And if you're starting fresh, the combined ESL + Bilingual credential set is achievable in a single, efficient program sequence.
A bilingual teacher does more than instruct — they build bridges between students' home languages and cultures and the demands of the academic environment. In the communities GCU serves across Ocean, Monmouth, Mercer, and Middlesex counties, bilingual educators have a particularly meaningful role in the lives of students and families.
New Jersey’s bilingual education programs serve hundreds of thousands of multilingual learners across the state, and the teachers in those programs must hold the appropriate endorsement. GCU’s program prepares certified teachers with proficiency in both English and another language to become effective bilingual educators — authorized to teach the subject(s) and grade levels of their instructional certificate to speakers of other languages in a bilingual setting.
The program is grounded in TESOL standards, the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers (NJPST), and InTASC standards. Coursework covers second language acquisition theory, teaching ESL through content, phonology and structure of American English, and literacy for multilingual learners. The program also prepares bilingual teachers to help English learners and multilingual learners meet the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards.
Who This Program Is For: Certified NJ teachers who are proficient in both English and another language (most commonly Spanish), hold a valid NJ instructional certificate with a co-certification in the content or grade level they wish to teach bilingually (an ESL endorsement is also acceptable as the co-certification), and want to formally expand their practice into bilingual instruction.
In addition to completing the courses listed below, students must earn a passing score on oral (OPI) and written English proficiency (WPT) examinations by the end of the program.
