Early literacy intervention is one of the highest-leverage skills a P–3 or elementary teacher can develop. GCU's 19-credit Early Literacy Specialist Endorsement builds that expertise — covering the science of reading for young learners, Wilson Reading System introduction, assessment, and screening — and leads to NJ early literacy specialist certification for teachers with three years of experience.

Across the country — and specifically in New Jersey — the science of reading movement is changing what schools expect from literacy educators. Districts are investing in early identification, structured literacy instruction, and intervention. The Early Literacy Specialist endorsement positions you as a credentialed expert in exactly the skills districts are prioritizing right now.
The Early Literacy Specialist is an NJ educational services certification — not just a professional development credential. It formally authorizes your expertise and is recognized by NJ school districts as the credential that distinguishes specialist-level literacy practitioners from classroom teachers with literacy training. That distinction matters for hiring, role assignment, and compensation.
GCU's Early Literacy Specialist program includes EDC6203 Introduction to Wilson Reading System — a hallmark of GCU's literacy programs and an increasingly expected credential in structured literacy hiring. You'll graduate with foundational Wilson training alongside your formal NJ endorsement.
Nineteen credits is a focused, achievable scope for working teachers. And if you want to continue — to the full Reading/Literacy Specialization M.Ed. or one of the Multisensory Literacy tracks — every course in this endorsement is directly relevant to those programs. Think of it as the first step in a larger literacy career trajectory.
The early literacy specialist is the classroom teacher’s expert partner for the most critical years of reading development — a specialist who understands how young children acquire literacy, which interventions work for struggling readers, and how to lead literacy practice across a school or grade level. GCU’s program prepares certified P–3 and elementary teachers for this role.
The 19-credit program is built on the standards of the International Reading Association (IRA) for Reading Professionals, the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for ELAL, and the NJ Professional Standards for Teachers. It covers literacy acquisition theory for young children, multilingual learner literacy, reading process knowledge, program evaluation, assessment of emergent literacy and language, early writing support techniques, and a reading specialist practicum. Uniquely, the program introduces the Wilson Reading System — a GCU program hallmark — through the included EDC6203 Introduction to Wilson Reading System course.
All courses include a keystone assessment/artifact for your professional portfolio. Program completers with three years of full-time teaching are eligible for NJ educational services certification as an early literacy specialist.
Note: This is a distinct program from the Reading/Literacy Specialization M.Ed. or the Multisensory Literacy programs — it focuses specifically on early literacy (P–3 and early elementary), and requires P–3 or elementary certification to enter.
