Why study the ESL Endorsement & M.Ed. Option (w/Supervisor Endorsement) at GCU?

One of NJ's Most Consistently In-Demand Teacher Certifications

New Jersey ESL teacher positions are among the hardest to fill in the state — and the shortage is not temporary. As the multilingual learner population continues to grow in Ocean, Monmouth, Mercer, and Middlesex counties and across NJ, districts need more certified ESL teachers than the current pipeline produces. Earning this endorsement puts you in genuine, sustained demand.

A Flexible Two-Tier Program — Stop at the Endorsement or Continue to the M.Ed.

The ESL program is one of GCU's most flexible credential pathways. Complete 15 credits and you earn the NJ ESL Teacher Endorsement — a complete, valuable credential in its own right. Continue for 18 more credits and you earn a full M.Ed. and NJ School Supervisor eligibility. The structure lets you match your ambition to your timeline, with no wasted work at either stopping point.

Culturally Sustaining — Not Just Procedural

This program doesn't just teach you the mechanics of ESL instruction — it develops your understanding of the cultural, historical, and linguistic contexts of multilingual learners. You'll study second language acquisition theory, the history and culture of immigrant communities, phonology, and multilingual literacy. That depth is what distinguishes excellent ESL teachers from adequate ones.

Leadership Credentials Available From the Same Program

If you complete the full M.Ed. pathway (33 credits), you earn not just the ESL endorsement but also NJ School Supervisor eligibility — the administrative credential that opens roles in curriculum coordination, instructional supervision, and ESL program direction. Three credentials in 33 credits is an exceptional return on your graduate investment.

Program overview

GCU’s ESL program is one of the most versatile endorsement programs in our catalog — because it’s designed to grow with you. At 15 credits, you earn eligibility for the NJ endorsement as a Teacher of English as a Second Language, authorizing you to provide ESL instruction in any NJ school. At 33 total credits, you add a Master of Education degree and eligibility for a Certificate of Eligibility as a School Supervisor.

The 15-credit ESL core develops your expertise across the foundational dimensions of ESL teaching: second language acquisition theory, teaching ESL through content, the history and culture of multilingual learners, phonology and structure of American English, and literacy for multilingual learners. The program is aligned with TESOL standards, the NJ Professional Standards for Teachers, and InTASC standards.

The additional 18-credit M.Ed./Supervisor portion adds curriculum leadership, curriculum management for diverse schools, research methods, supervision of instruction, multicultural literature, and the supervision and leadership seminar — giving you the administrative knowledge and credential to move from the ESL classroom into school or district leadership.

OPI and WPT exit requirements apply to ensure professional English proficiency standards.
