GCU’s B.S. in Computer Science is a return to foundational rigor: a program built around the theoretical and mathematical core of the discipline, preparing graduates who can not only build software but design algorithms, analyze computational complexity, develop machine learning systems, and understand the mathematics that makes all of it work.

The 49-credit major begins with the programming sequence — C++ (CS123), object-oriented design (CS126), Python (CS220), data structures (CS227), and database systems (CS231). Layered on top is the mathematics core: Calculus I, Calculus II, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics — the foundational tools of theoretical computer science. Upper-level courses then take students into the frontier: Algorithmic Analysis, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Data Visualization.

The program culminates in CS450 Applications Project — a capstone in which students design and build a substantial software application — and an elective research option (CS414 or CS415) for students who want to pursue original inquiry under faculty supervision.

Admissions Requirements First-Year Students

  • Completed application (rolling admissions — priority deadlines: November 1, January 1, March 1)
  • Official high school transcript (college preparatory curriculum, minimum 16 academic units)
  • SAT/ACT optional (test-optional institution)
  • Application essay and letter(s) of recommendation
  • $250 enrollment deposit upon acceptance

Strong Preparation Recommended: The B.S. in Computer Science requires Calculus I in the first year. Students are strongly recommended to have completed Precalculus (or equivalent) in high school. Strong performance in math — particularly algebra, functions, and trigonometry — is the best predictor of early success in this program.

Transfer Students

  • Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions
  • Minimum 24 transferable college credits
  • Students with prior programming coursework (C++, Python, Java, or equivalent) may be eligible for course substitutions — confirm with Program Coordinator Dr. Kim
  • Students transferring in with calculus credits may be eligible to waive MA115 — confirm with the Registrar

It requires calculus through Calculus II, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics, and includes upper-level courses in algorithmic analysis, machine learning, and AI. It’s the right choice if you want to pursue graduate study in CS or work in the most technically demanding roles (AI engineer, data scientist, research scientist). The B.A. in Computer Information Systems is more applied and systems-oriented — focused on programming, databases, data analytics, networks, and cybersecurity, without the calculus requirement. It’s ideal for students who want to work in IT, software development, or data analytics in business and organizational contexts.

Q: How much math is in this program, and do I need to be a “math person”? A: Quite a bit — and yes, you should be comfortable with math, or willing to develop that comfort quickly. The major requires Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics.
