Program
This interdisciplinary faculty-led study abroad program explores political leadership, educational systems, and social justice within the context of Ireland’s evolving democracy.
Students will examine:
- Ireland’s colonial history and independence movement
- European Union membership and modern governance
- The Northern Ireland peace process and the Good Friday Agreement
- Catholic and Mercy-rooted educational traditions
- Access, equity, and reconciliation in post-conflict societies

Itinerary
- Engage with Mercy-rooted institutions
- Learn about Northern Ireland peace process
- Visit reconciliation centers in Belfast
Academics
An interdisciplinary course will prepare students to understand the leadership, justice, and education current climate in Northern Ireland.
Faculty Leaders
Dr. Denise Furlong is an assistant professor of education and director of Advanced Programs for Reading Specialist & ESL. Before coming to GCU, she taught for over 25 years as a public-school teacher ranging from grades K-12. She is an award-winning author and international presenter at educational conferences
