For Gissela and her son, George Malgeri, Georgian Court University has always been more than a campus; it’s been a part of their family’s story.

Gissela and George both walked across the graduation stage in May and received their master’s degrees from Georgian Court: Gissela earned an M.A. in Educational Administration, and George completed an M.B.A. in Business Administration. While they didn’t plan to graduate together, timing and a little bit of fate made it happen.

“It just worked that way,” Gissela explained. “I started my master’s first, then George started his M.B.A. a year later. But we both graduated together, which was really special.”

A Family Legacy at GCU

Gissela’s journey with Georgian Court started nearly two decades ago when she enrolled to complete a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and education. After graduating in 2006, she was quickly recruited as a Spanish teacher in the Lakewood public schools, where she still teaches today.

“Georgian Court actually helped me get the job. They saw my credentials and told me there was an opening at Lakewood that matched my background. Within 60 days of finishing my degree, I was hired.”

Since 2007, Gissela has worked throughout the Lakewood Public School District, teaching at elementary, high, and middle schools. “I’ve built strong relationships with my students and their families, not just in the classroom, but at soccer fields, community events, churches, and family celebrations,” she said.

Gissela waited to pursue her master’s degree until the timing felt right for her family. “I always said, ‘When my son is grown and independent, then I’ll return.’ When I was finally ready, I applied for the master’s program, and I loved every moment of it.”

George, too, found his academic home at Georgian Court after transferring from Ocean County College to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science.

While interning for a New Jersey state senator, George initially explored law school, but soon recognized the value of adding an M.B.A. first. “So many law students were pursuing dual degrees, and I saw how the M.B.A. would open doors for me in business and government,” he explained.

While completing his M.B.A., George was elected to the Brick Township Board of Education, where he gained a deeper appreciation for education policy, public service, and leadership. “The M.B.A. prepared me to look at decisions from a broader perspective,” he said. He continues to serve on the board while preparing for law school, studying for the LSAT, and planning to earn his real estate license this year.

Support from Faculty and Staff

Gissela and George attribute their academic success to the supportive environment at Georgian Court University. They benefited from helpful professors and support staff who provided personal attention, encouragement, and flexibility throughout their time.

“Georgian Court feels like a family,” Gissela said. “The professors are always there for you, even when life gets complicated. They genuinely care about your success.”

George emphasized the mentorship he received from several faculty members, including Dr. Scott Bennett, Professor and Chair of the Department of History, and Dr. Jonathan Kim-Reuter, Associate Professor of Philosophy. “They offered internship opportunities, career advice, and real-world insights that extended far beyond the classroom,” he noted.

For Gissela, support came in various forms—from academic resources provided by staff to professors who assisted her during personal challenges. “When I was hospitalized during my master’s program, my professors ensured that I didn’t fall behind,” she shared. “That kind of understanding meant everything to me.”

A Commencement to Remember and Advice for Future Students

Walking across the graduation stage together was a memorable moment for both mother and son. Although they pursued different academic programs, they supported each other along the way.

“I reviewed many of my mother’s papers while she was earning her degree,” George shared. “Through that, I learned a lot about education administration, which now helps me in my role on the school board.”

As proud alumni, Gissela and George encourage others, especially students and working adults, to consider attending Georgian Court University.

“You don’t need to go far for an excellent education,” Gissela stated. “Georgian Court prepares you for the next step and provides support along the way.”

George echoed her sentiment, saying, “They make higher education accessible. Thanks to scholarships like Phi Theta Kappa, I could continue my education without overwhelming debt, and the experience has helped shape who I am today.”

For parents and adults considering returning to school, Gissela has simple advice: don’t wait. “As soon as you know you’re ready, go for it.” She encouraged, “Time passes quickly. Before you know it, you could be walking across that stage.”

Gissela and George are grateful for how Georgian Court shaped their growth and how it continues to create opportunities beyond the classroom.
