Special Education & Culture: A South African Experience

Program

The purpose of our program is to expose students to the education, culture, and customs of people in and around Cape Town, South Africa. The trip is split between the metropolitan center of Cape Town and the surrounding region in the province of Western Cape. This will give students perspectives on different customs, cultures, and diasporas in rural and urban areas. The major aspect of the program will focus on the education of students with special needs in and around Cape Town, South Africa

Itinerary

  • Observe and volunteer in special education programs
  • Visit Table Mountain
  • Experience South African culture

Academics

This course will expose students to the education, culture, and customs of people in and around Cape Town, South Africa. The major aspect of this program will focus on the education of students with special needs in and around Cape Town, South Africa. A visit to an inclusive and a special education school will help students understand special education service delivery from a different perspective. Students will volunteer in these educational facilities, and assist children struggling with reading, writing, and/or math concepts. Students will have an opportunity to understand factors affecting special education service delivery in other cultures. Instructor approval required for enrollment. One credit, one semester.

Faculty Leaders

Dr. Karen J. Kelly is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Psychology and Counseling. Having studied abroad in Germany as an
undergraduate, Dr. Kelly strongly believes in the transformative power of
visiting other countries and learning about other cultures. Since this is her
first trip to South Africa, she is very excited to share the experience of
travelling to a new place with her students.

 

Dr. Lindiwe Magaya is an associate professor in education, in the Teacher of Students with Disabilities program. She belongs to the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the Division of International Special Education Services (DISES) organizations that advocate for the needs of children and youth with disabilities in the US and globally. She has successfully led two trips to South Africa, in 2020 and 2023.
