This past semester, the School of Business & Digital Media celebrated a number of firsts:
- Our first in-person Senior Design Show since the onset of the pandemic
- Our first in-person and joint Honors Induction Ceremonyin which we recognized the academic achievement of our business and digital communication students
- Our first SBDM Faculty Research Roundtables, in which SBDM faculty share and discuss their current research projects
- Our first year of Invest in Yourself professional and career development workshops for students – including networking skills, presentation skills, the importance of teams in the workplace, and citations and copyright.
- Our first annual SBDM Advisory Council Recognition Luncheon in which we awarded the inaugural the SBDM Executive Advisory Council Emerging Leader Awards to Daryl Layton, Jr. and Hanna Thrainsdottir.
Last but not least – please join me in congratulating Jinsook Kim, PhD on her tenure and promotion to associate professor of graphic design and multimedia!

Student Spotlight: Paula Simone ’22

Paula Simone ‘22 graduated with an undergraduate degree in Accounting. She served Vice President of the GCU Business Club for over two years and was also a member of Dean’s Student Advisory Council.
Paula also served as the GCU Ambassador for NJCPA. Paula will be joining EisnerAmper as an auditor in the fall. Congratulations, Paula!
As part of Critical Concerns Week 2022, on Wednesday, March 23rd, Brian McSherry, J.D., assistant professor of graphic design and multimedia, curated a Nonviolence art and design exhibit with student works to examine what nonviolence is and whether it can exist without violence. Click to read more.
Faculty-Student Research
Marci Mazzarotto, PhD and Ellen Bernhard, PhD, assistant professors of digital communication, actively serve as mentors to SBDM students in research. Alycia Bardon ’22 & Hanna Thrainsdottir ‘22 – both digital communication students – presented at the National Popular Culture Association Conference in April 2022 and at GCU’s Academic Excellence Day.

Faculty Spotlight – Cathleen McQuillen

Cathleen McQuillen, DPS, associate professor of accounting, was awarded the Virginia Graham ’31 Award for Teaching Excellence, which is presented to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding leadership, teaching, and mentoring skills and a strong commitment to inspiring and helping students. Congratulations, Dr. McQuillen!
One Show, One Earth, the 2022 Senior Design Show, featured 20 graphic design or multimedia pieces from five seniors – Jarod Brzyski, Kim Casino, Lilly Flicker, Christina Grasso and Brandon Ogrodnik – under the direction of Dr. Jinsook Kim. Each student produced 3-4 original works, including infographic posters, packaging, short movies and campaign advertisements for environmental themes such as global warming and air-pollution. Alumni Sighting

Dean Edmonds attended the June Monmouth Ocean Development Council meeting and reconnected with Megan O’Keefe MBA ’19. Megan is the Executive Director at Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey and is also a member of MODC.
International Women’s Day
Women in BizEd shared the stories of Dean Jennifer Edmonds and six other women deans to “shed light on the costs that affect women leaders in higher education” in the What Is the Cost of Success for Women in Academia? article for Harvard Business Publishing Education.
SBDM Outreach

Rising first year students in the Spartan School of Business & Finance at Ocean Township High School visited Georgian Court University and spent time with the SBDM this summer; Michael Pawlish, PhD, assistant professor of business administration presented on corporate sustainability and discussed carbon neutral (and even carbon negative!) firms with the students.
